I believe companies make hard decisions all the time and the USPS is not excluded form this at all. The idea of cutting 80,000 jobs in todays economy is a scary idea. We need to be figuring out new and inventive ways to create jobs instead of cutting them. It is never easy to make the decision to let an employee go especially when the unemployment rate is now at a stagering 9.8% and rising.
When your demand lesseons by 20% there is little need to keep the number of employees you currently have. One of the many proplems the mail service has is that there are more and more people and less and less mail. The routes of the mail carriers may have to be expanded and reworked to accomidate the amount of mail.
I worked in the trucking industry for five years or more and when there is less freight to deliver you have to use less drivers to deliver it.
I am not sold on the idea of cutting out Saterday delivery. I would lean more on the idea of making the system we have now more effecient. This would still mean less employees however it may mean not having to lay off as many employees.
