This discussion could go both ways as far as what side I choose. I would have to stick with keeping Saturday deliveries. I see a lot more negative consequences then positive if we were to eliminate Saturday deliveries.
I understand that with a lot of people doing bills online and using the internet as a main source of mail, the USPS is losing a lot of money. But like the article said, if they were to eliminate Saturday deliveries they would have to lay off nearly 80,000 workers. Is laying off that many people really worth it right now considering the economic state our country is in? Our country needs to create more jobs and they are proposing the elimination of more jobs, so it is almost a step backwards from what we want to accomplish.
They also brought up in the article that many people still depend on Saturday mail. Just because it is considered the weekend doesn't mean it is any less necessary then mail delivered on Tuesday or Thursday. People still need their medication, their bills, their checks and so forth no matter what mail day it is. That would also make the workloads larger on Monday's not to mention customers have to wait an extra day for mail.
In conclusion I really don't see any positives that can outweigh the negatives in the case. People need their mail, whether it is Monday, Wednesday or Saturday. Eliminating Saturday deliveries would create a large backlash in our country and it is something that we don't need.
