After listening to this article, I am unable to outweigh the negatives with positives if the USPS canceled mail deliveries on Saturdays. The argument of there being less of a need and a loss of money just doesn't stand up. The other side of that argument is that jobs would be lost, and important shipments would have to be put on hold for the entire weekend. I agree with the president of the union when he said that it gave the company a competitive edge to provide mailing services on Saturdays. I know as a consumer, if I had a dire need to mail something last minute, I would be so thankful for such a provision from a company.
I do not agree with the possibility of lay-offs due to the lessened need of mail delivery on Saturdays. That day was made available for a reason, and to take it away would just cause more problems. Aren't we trying to create more jobs in the economy that we are in? Laying off workers for this reason is not substantial.
Another good point that was made was the need of delivery for crucial items such as social security checks and prescription medicines. Crucial is the perfect word. Taking away one day when recipients are depending on those items to be delivered could cause an uproar. I do not support the idea of eliminating Saturday mail delivery for it would only do more damage than good.
