Post 10

If the argument for the elderly is that they would miss seeing their mail carrier two days in a row or that they may have to wait an extra day to get a social security check, then stop delivery on a weekday. Maybe we should have no mail delivery on Wednesday’s. This solves the problem the elderly have reported. They would not have to wait any two day period without mail or their mail carrier. I understand that some people build a relationship with their mail carrier but mine has been a love/hate relationship. On many occasions I have had to sign for a piece of certified mail and the mail carrier has kicked my dog as I open the door. At other times I have been working in my yard and approach him to get my mail and he has refused to hand it to me. He said he is required by law to put it only in my mailbox. My mailman is far from friendly and I wouldn’t mind if I never saw him again.

A second option may be to have a choice of community mail boxes or post office boxes only. This would reduce the amount of time the postal workers are on the clock, thus reducing the USPS overhead and making them more profitable. Many of the newer neighborhoods in Wichita already have a community mailbox that houses multiple mailboxes for an entire block. This means one stop per block, no walking up and down each street to deliver mail. The elderly or those unable to drive to the post office are still able to receive their mail on a daily basis. By using post office boxes, the public will be required to pick up their mail. My house receives such little “snail mail” that I would pick up my mail, on average, once per week at the post office.

Between these two options, I believe a better resolution can be found to save USPS money and turn a profit again.
