Hello students,
Glad to see you made it to our class blog. Each response should be around 500 words or so.
For your first post, I'd like to expand the class discussion we started our first day of class. Imagine you are the boss or CEO of a company (feel free to be creative with what company that would be) and use this blog post as an address / policy statement to your employees outlining your opinions on written communication. Consider the changing use of language we discussed in class, when you will and will not tolerate quick "text message" style communication, how you want your employees to be perceived by clients/customers/co-workers in written communication, how they can use language to influence that perception, and any other points you feel are pertinent to this discussion.
The ideas above are intended to get you going, but if you want to take a slightly skewed perspective in your post, feel free. As long as you're consistent with the general spirit of the topic, I want you to be creative and have fun with these posts. Have fun.
This blog is as if I am a CEO of a large investing firm addressing the employees.
ReplyDeleteAs CEO of Investors International, quick text messaging styles of communication will be stopped immediately. All emails, blogs, texts, and other forms of communication should be in thorough and correct English format. The perception that improper English and bad communication skills leaves a terrible and lasting memory in our investors minds which could harm the ability to do more business with them or their colleagues in the future. Also quick texting-like emails to other co-workers will also be forbidden. This will help with getting this form of communication completely out of the work place so you do not become immune or in the habit of using that form or communication during any emails or other lines of communication. In this industry I believe that bad communication leads our investors to believe that we may not make the best investments or are as not as educated as first possibly thought. They have right to come to that conclusion because bad English and communication skills is the first key element to an under-educated individual. Do you ever wonder why smooth talkers are perceived as being smart and educated? This is not just a coincidence, but a quick and easy assumption to the education status of that individual. If you personally want to be looked upon as an educated individual both in and out of the workplace, then you will strive to use correct communication skills to try and uphold that status. Here at Investors International, we will strive to be the best investors for our clients which demands a high education, and if you are not willing to uphold that status and use proper communication skills, rethinking and reviewing your current career may be a necessity. As employees you represent this company and I along with other co-workers expect you to make a positive representation of the company. If failure to change continues to be a problem there will be penalties that follow offences with possible termination to those who start to harm the reputation of this company.
