Post #1 - Use of Text Language Within the Work Place

Team Members,

The ever-increasing use of technology in today's business world has opened up an entire realm of possibilities regarding communication. The usage of email and text messaging has provided quick and effective communication for our company. However, it has come to my attention that the use of text language within these channels has had a negative effect on our company. Text language is communicating with symbols, abbreviations, and misspelled words in the attempt to relay a message in the quickest manner possible. We are all guilty of using text language, whether it is while talking to a co-worker, a customer, or even a superior.

I would like to stress the importance of communicating with the utmost respect towards others in the workplace. Professionalism is a key factor in running a successful business, therefore we need to act professional in all that we do as a company. Regarding co-workers, it is easy to share an informal approach to communicating with each other. But, in order to avoid complications, it is better to provide simple, concise, and effective ways of communication. This also relates to the issues created with our customers. If our mission is to serve our customers, how can we show our appreciation and value if we are unable to communicate in a professional manner? How could any customer take our company seriously? For example, imagine one of our project managers relayed a message to a sales representative using email and shorthand text language. The sales representative understood the message, in this instance, and then passed the message onto a customer. The customer saw not only the way our company's empolyees communicated with each other, but also the poor way we chose to communicate outside of our company. If you were the customer and saw the message, what would your opinion of our company be?

Management is implementing a procedure of discipline for those who disregard this warning: those unable to heed to this policy and ignore warnings, will be written up which can possibly also lead up to and include termination of employment.

Bottom line, treat everyone you work with, co-workers and customers alike, with respect. That includes writing and communicating in a professional manner, spelling out whole words and discarding the use of symbols. Use effective communication, getting the message across the first time and making sure it is understood. Converse in a way that is effective and respectful. After all, this company is a successful and professional business and it should be conducted and conveyed as such.

Thank you,

Melissa Thompson
