It’s very surprising to me that gender discrimination is still occurring in 2010. The article did a very good job explain how gender discrimination is taking place not only in the United States but also in different countries around the world. So why it is that woman are underpaid? We all know it’s not their inability to perform as well as men. The first reason maybe because of the frequent choice to drop out for a few years to raise children obviously lowers women's income statistics in those years. Mothering experiences also changes many women so that they often do not rejoin the climbing-the-ladder job track. Then the type A (workaholic) behavior that most top executives choose is not chosen very often by women, which would be another reason men earn more money. Also in my opinion, women tend to go for the lower-paying, more people-friendly jobs more then men or they tend to charge less for their services.
I think the article overall was very interesting and like most people I would like to eliminate gender discrimination world wide. People should be paid a certain amount based on their performance and their skills, not because of gender. I would definitely support the bill mentioned in the article. I’ve seen different articles on gender discrimination in the past years and I feel like nothing is being done. Complaining about the issue but not taking the measures needed to eliminate it, is not doing any good for anyone. Hopefully we will see some progress in the near future and maybe men and women will feel equal in this country.
