In a recent radio segment for Marketplace, Kenny Malone discusses different ways companies deal with negative comments on their facebook pages. After either reading or listening to the story, how do you feel about the different ways to regulate company pages? Do you think the tactics of companies like BP who interrupt their customers are preferable to companies who intervene? What benefits and downfalls can you see to each practice? You may also discuss examples of this type of negative posting you've noticed and what was/should have been done about it.
I believe that companies have the rights and should regulate the pages on sights such as facebook. If and when there are false accusations about a big company like BP, it could hurt their revenues more than anyone could imagine. I am talking about millions and possibly billions of dollars could be lost in business transactions by false information that is posted on the internet. With the digital age of the 21 century, it has become more evident to me that peoples comments have a much bigger impact on other things than they used to because the internet is worldwide. Once it is on the internet then it is available for anyone to see. We should still protect the freedom of speech which is a fundamental constitutional right, but on the flip side false statements and accusations that can go viral should have some penalty or punishment for such actions.
