Prompt #5

I saw “Social Network” opening weekend and enjoyed it. I felt it shed light on a situation that I was unaware had happened. Leading up to the release, I heard about the movie was going to reveal what really happened at the time Facebook was created, yet let the viewer decide who was right. I believe it did just that.

After watching the movie, I felt for Mark Zuckerberg. He was asked to create a website and was given the smallest amount of information to start with. From that basic idea, he designed and created the entire website by himself; his best friend being the financer. The Winklevoss twins then claimed Zuckerberg stole their idea, when it was the twins who invited Zuckerberg into their home. Once the website went live, he continued to tweak it and allow new universities to join. Eventually he got it to where it is today, allowing everyone to join.

I heard on the radio earlier this week that Mark Zuckerberg created the same type of website while in High School, called “The Facebook”. It was a compilation of student pictures, names, and phone numbers. Hearing this information confirms my belief that Zuckerberg took nothing from the twins, he did it all himself.

After viewing the movie, I have not changed my usage of Facebook, nor do I plan to. I’m not an entrepreneur in the least, but I am inspired by seeing what a student can do if they put their mind to it.

  1. Thanks for the background info, Sarah. Instances like this make me wonder if you can ever really believe someone's story without evidence to back it up. And yes, it can be inspiring. I wish I'd thought of it.
